When Western medicine fails, acupuncture can be a great way to treat common ailments and diseases. While its overall effectiveness is often debated, many people use and believe it in place of medication and surgery. Its effects are sometimes described as a placebo, but dedicated patients swear by its effectiveness.
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China. Because surgeries and cutting of the body was strictly forbidden, it was developed as a treatment method. This is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that employs the use of sharp needles driven into the skin. There is a complicated science behind where the needles are placed depending on the particular illness being treated.
The first step when being treated is to be properly diagnosed. Practitioners will typically examine the patient, paying close attention to areas on the head such as the tongue. Many complex questions will be asked before an individualized method is developed. The patient will lie down, usually on a medical table and told to relax. Long stainless steel needles are pressed into different areas of the skin. After a period of time, the needles are pulled out and the treatment is over. One or several appointments will be needed.
Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and even the common cold have been treated with varied results. Sometimes, people who have exhausted all other medical options will use this as an alternate method or just to help with pain. Just about anyone can schedule an appointment as long as they have some sort of minor ailment.
Most locations with a large and established Chinese population will have advertisements in front of buildings that offer treatment. Even some chiropractors offer it as an additional service. There are also large centers and even places of study where people can get consultations and schedule appointments. Acupuncture clinics are not at all different from traditional doctors offices, universities and medical centers.
Before having any procedure done be sure to check the credentials of the practitioner. Just like Western medicine, acupuncture practitioners must receive certification after extended study. Also check to see if the needles used are disposable or properly sterilized before usage. Contaminated needles can transmit deadly diseases. Ask about potential side effects and be vocal if you experience any.
Depending on your medical situation, having an alternative medicine procedure could benefit your health overall. Taking the time to research practitioners is essential, and make sure that you are comfortable with the one you choose. All of the same rules that you could apply to a medical doctor should be considered before taking the plunge.
