Floods can cause severe havoc to your garden and home and this can be more frustrating for those who have a keen eye for natural surroundings and end up spending a large chunk of their times on nurturing their home garden with lots of care and devotion. Once flood damage sets in your garden, you need to gear up to bring your home and garden back to normalcy as soon as possible. Keep in mind that more delays doing this mean more work to be done after.

Flood water brings with it a lot of impurities including germs and bacteria that can be detrimental to the growth and development of fruits and vegetables grown in your home garden. So, the most important thing to be kept in mind is to always boil your fruits and vegetables before consuming them to make them safe for eating.

Flood water may enter the roots leading to a blockage of oxygen to the plants which will result in either their death or poor and improper growth. Look out for trouble signs like yellow or brown leaves and don't hesitate to throw away damaged or dead plants in your garden because in the absence of proper maintenance, floods leave plants and trees susceptible to injury or premature death which should be avoided. You also need to put some slow-release fertilizer as the flood damage may not show up until several years. Raising flower beds by a couple of inches could avoid or at least decrease the flood damage in severe cases.

Flood water can also result in reducing or blocking drainage in the plants. We can tackle this flood damage problem if we act with a balanced mind and recover from water damage to the plants. What we need to do is double dig the flower beds by moving the top layer of soil to the side and turning over the soil underneath, thus providing a proper drainage to our plants.

Your garden may take a few weeks or a little more to completely recover from this catastrophe, so don't panic. Let your garden get rid of excess water to avoid the damage to the roots. Providing your garden with compost, farm yard manure or mushroom compost can help the earthworms to recover and in turn, prove to be a major remedy in case of extreme flood or water damage. Another vital hint is providing a dressing of calcified seaweed which stimulates the proliferation of soil micro-organisms in the plants. If you have plants in very low-lying areas, the recovery may be take much more time. Potting these plants is the best solution for a quick recovery.

No doubt, effort and time are the two major important factors to help your garden completely recover from flood damage, yet you can help the garden of your dreams revive its lost glory by your dedication along with a pot full of remedial measures. We cannot control the natural hazards but we can take a few important remedies to help the plants grow back to their previous conditions.
