When you finally get done with high school, college probably isn't too far behind and many times when a child reaches a certain age they can no longer be covered by their parents insurance. This can become quite a troubling situation if they aren't working, however, many colleges actually offer health care plans for the student body. Deciding if these plans are good for you or not takes a lot of deliberating. For the most part college health benefits are going to vary from school to school and although many people think that this is free, which definitely is NOT the case. While office visits and routine check-ups can be free of charge but lab work and other specialty items will cost you money.

Benefits will usually pay for only certain types of covered services at the health care campus center. In the event that you have to see an outside doctor then the student's coverage can drop up to 70% and run the risk of being required to pay a high deductible. Also, if you have a pre-existing health condition then you may have a problem getting treatment at a college health care center. When you have a pre-existing disease of have a disability of sorts this doesn't mean you will be disqualified for getting a health insurance plan but you may not be able to get treatment for your pre-existing condition.

Obviously this isn't a good thing and can lead to a number of problems! All plans are all different so be sure you find out as much information about your college's plan as you can. If you have children and your going to college, it's a good idea to make sure you or your child will be covered when school is out. This is an important facet because the last thing you want to do is have an accident of some sort and then find out that the insurance becomes inactive when you are not in class. Several colleges do have coverage during off season but many do not. So just be sure to double check with this. Make sure that you understand the plan that you are under, is it an HMO? Or can the individual that is covered use any provider that they want? This is important as well because you need to know where you can go in case of an emergency and there is nothing worse than having an accident, going to an invalid provider and then finding out afterwards that you have to pay the entire medical bill!

There really is no definitive answer as to whether you should or shouldn't commit in getting a college health insurance. Be sure that you realize your plan in full so that no troubles can develop in the event of a pinch. While it is not free insurance, it surely will save you money in the event of an illness. In the end, it's up to you. But be sure to go over all the pros and cons before making a finalized decision and as aforementioned, be aware of all the "rules" and regulations.
