You tried to deny it by saying things like "it's a fad", "it will never catch on", it's only for games and science nerds. Well guess what computers have taken over and if you don't use one yet you better soon before you go the way of the dinosaur and become extinct!

Computers are everywhere! Take a minute to try and think of one place that is not using a computer of some kind. Go on, just try. Can't think of one can you? That's because everyone from the small mom-and-pop store to the high tech hospital is using a computer. Because of the preponderance of computers we are now a self service nation. Remember when you could pull into a gas station, have one man pump your gas, another clean your windshield, and yet another check your oil? No? You must be too young then but it did happen at one time.

Some glaring examples of self service due to computers are the ATM machine no human teller needed, cash registers that send purchase details back to headquarters, no waiting for snail mail to show up days later, or ordering a pizza from a predetermined menu on the phone, once again no human interaction needed. It is important to realize that interacting with a computer is now a requirement, whether you like it or not. After all, how many times have you already heard "press 1 for English"? You must make that fateful leap onto the binary bandwagon or forever be considered a fossil.

Let's make some predictions shall we?

The old way of doing things will slowly disappear
All paper based transactions will disappear (checks, money orders)

All documentation (file cabinets) will be converted to electronic files

The post office will become obsolete
Homes will become less cluttered with stacks of paper
Natural resources will once again flourish

This all sounds wonderful but also scary to someone not comfortable on the computer. Just remember, computers are designed so even a child can use them and the menus and options available are very easy to understand. So you will be just fine no matter how many buttons there are.

It's easy, so let's walk through it. When you first sit at a computer you look for the main menu, this is usually displayed as soon as you turn the computer on. All the options on the main menu will take you to additional menus. Think of it as ordering a potato at a restaurant. The main menu is the potato, the additional menus are the choice between having your potato baked, mashed, or fried. With me so far? All these additional menus will do is help you narrow down exactly which service you need, like finally ordering your potato baked with sour cream and chives with a little butter on the side. See how easy that was?

Two of your best friends on any computer are the return to main menu option and help. By returning to the main menu you can start your search over if you find yourself in a place you don't want to be. The help option gives some great advice on how to use a service and may even provide contact information if you would rather talk to a person.

There is just no way around it, computers are here to stay. Love em or hate em, they are virtually impossible to avoid. Just remember the potato (menu system) and you will soon be using the computer like a pro!
