Hallways introduce the world to your home, as such they should be warm and inviting spaces. Try and keep them as clutter free as possible in order to give the all essential first impressions as to the interior of the rest of your house. Messy, untidy hallways can give a poor impression and people will start to look at the rest of your home with a negative stance!
If you have a long thin hallways you will be restricted as to what you can do to enhance it! Decorate in white or pale neutral colour to give the illusion of more space and light. Make the door as beautiful as possible by keeping it crisp and clean looking on the outside and inside!
Wall art which leads the eye upwards will help reduce the corridor effect. If possible add a large mirror which will not only provide the optical illusion of more space but can also be used to bring more light into the space.
You may like to consider opening up the cupboard under the stairs if you live in an older style house. It is amazing how much more space this will provide as well as providing more space and a different perspective to the look of the space.
If you have a hall space rather than a corridor the same basic principles apply. Make them bright and inviting places. With larger spaces deeper and more vibrant colours can be used. The revival for using wallpaper is ideal for hallways as they take a lot of wear and tear.
Floorboards or tiles are far easier to keep clean and fresh looking than carpets. Carpets in hallways are a recipe for potential disaster as you can very easily end up with a dirty traffic areas.
If you have space add a small table with a mirror above. This may sound rather traditional then innovative, however it's good to be able to give your appearance a quick glance before leaving the house!
Move away from traditional styles of hall tables and find second hand bargains which you can paint in a contrasting colour to the walls. This will add a focal point on which you can place vases filled with fresh seasonal flowers to provide a warm welcome.
Traditional coat stands may have their place in your home and they are certainly a better choice than leaving coats draped over the stair banisters! Interior designers have created some wonderful alternative such as wall art murals which have small pegs or posts giving a 3D effect and a trendy place to hang hats and coats. If you don't have the space for a coat rack or a cupboard to put them in use the back of the door, however make sure you don't over stack them or the whole wonderful chic look will be spoilt in an instant.
Lighting is another important factor when decorating hallways. Add a warm glow and a welcoming atmosphere by placing a small table lamp on the table. Alternatively if space permits a trendy floor lamp can look very effective. |
