Hollywood Helps Crane Hire Companies

The construction industry has taken a knock lately with house building coming to a near halt due to the financial constraints being felt globally. Companies in the crane hire business have however learned to diversify, and as long as they are adhering to the latest health and safety requirements put forward in parliament, there is the opportunity for exciting contracts on the horizon.
The sight of cranes on the horizon is usually indicative of an economic boom, but with the recent slowdown, the distinctive silhouette could be the indicator of something else completely. Crane hire companies are keeping in business by hiring out some of their most spectacular pieces of equipment to film companies.
The film industry is well known for raking in billion dollar budgets, and a slice of that is being injected into the construction industry. Blockbuster movies such as Casino Royal and War of the Worlds are two such films that have used the services of crane hire companies on set.
The main protagonist in War of the Worlds was portrayed as a crane operator. The logistics of including cranes in a storyline is not easy. Crane operators are highly skilled, requiring a plethora of health and safety qualifications. Crane hire companies are responsible for the safety of the operators and the public generally when it comes to the operation of such machinery.
As there have been several accidents involving the collapse of cranes, hires companies have upped the ante to improve safety procedures. Engineers are now responsible for carrying out regular MOT inspections on equipment and the request for ensuring high tensile bolts are correctly fitted is in operation. Older cranes are also set to have a scrap by date so that outmoded or unreliable equipment cannot pose a danger to the public or the operators.
On a film set, the inclusion of these mammoth structures is a serious strain on a risk assessment, especially in films such as Casino Royal where high octane action complicates matters further. Crane hire companies do however get a good chance to promote their company on the big screen, and therefore sending in the biggest and best cranes available for hire with the company name on the side is worth its weight in gold. After the fame that has befallen some companies through the silver screen, the marketing and brand awareness is bound to be a major boost once the construction industry picks up again. |
