An Internship in Japan can be enriching in terms of learning and exposure to work methods in some of the most efficient and quality conscious organizations in the world. It also allows you to learn a new language, a new culture, and different traditions.
Besides the career and learning benefits, one must consider the costs when planning an internship in Japan. As a prosperous and developed country, Japan has a high standard of living.
Although the costs of food and accommodation are considered to be quite high, in the last 10 years, due to the general deflation of economy as a whole, it has in fact become a very reasonably priced country to live in. Even so, all the costs involved with participating in an internship should be considered before you decide to take up such an opportunity.
There are a number of expenses you should plan for. The first is applying for an internship. If you go through a professional organization, you may have to pay an initial enrolment fee. This could be anything from $50 to $250 and would be non-refundable. Although, these days there are often companies who are able to organize internship placements for either a minimal cost, or sometimes even for free.
Once you manage to secure an internship placement, it's time to get your flights and visa. Thankfully, there are no fees for obtaining a Visa to Japan. The airfare however will be the biggest overhead for your Japan internship. There are many low cost carriers that fly internationally to most major cities in Japan. Even with low cost carriers, the cost of air tickets could range from between $1,000 to $2,000 for a round trip, depending on the time of your travel.
These are the initial costs you would have to incur prior to starting your Japan internship. After you arrive in Japan, you also need to consider the costs of living, including food, accommodation, travel, and leisure expenses.
Depending on the type of industry, and location of the internship you participate in, you may find that your employer will be able to provide dormitory-style accommodation for staff, including meals. This will most certainly be deducted from your salary, but most likely at a rate much cheaper than it would be to source your own accommodation, and prepare your own meals.
For students who wish to organize everything themselves, these costs could go up to $1,000 a month (while employer provided accommodation and meals would only be about 60% of that).
As for travel and leisure expenses, these will vary greatly depending on the lifestyle you wish to have while you are there.
Before you accept an internship offer in Japan, you should carefully research and understand all of the costs involved. Most companies who assist you will provide you with a detailed breakdown of the costs you are likely to incur. If the internship you have been selected for is a paid one, you may be able to cover all the costs involved, but it is not likely that you will be able to save much money in the process. If your internship is unpaid however, all of these costs would be out of your pocket, which can become costly very quickly.
Calculating the total of all these expenses, and considering your internship to be of 12 weeks, the total cost you are likely to incur for a paid Japan internship would come out roughly equal to what you earn while you are there (in essence, it's a 12 week work experience placement for free).
If you participate in an unpaid internship however, the total costs could range between $7,000 or more. Therefore, it's wise to seek out internships which are paid, or which offer employer-subsidized accommodation and meals, in which case the cost for the experience would go down to a much more reasonable sum. |
