Interior Design : How To Achieve The Best Mirror Lighting

Mirror lighting is something people are mostly conscious of because it somehow influences their perception regarding their own appearance. Generally, professionals from the hospitality industry recommend a mirror lighting that is not glaring yet bright and accurate yet flattering.

Low power and low maintenance mirror lightings are more popular for commercial or public cases. There are certain things to be considered for desirable mirror lighting such as fixture placement, fixture style, and the lamp or bulb type:

Fixture Placement:

The best mirror lighting is the one that illuminates the surrounding areas of the face. Light falling on all adjacent areas of the face minimizes shadow on the forehead, cheeks, eyes, and chin. However, you don't need to go for round light bulbs for this; a wall sconce on both sides of the mirror can be perfect. Usually, it is desirable to have the centre of the fixture placed at a height of about 65 inches from the finished floor and 30 inches apart. These figures can vary according to the typical style and other particulars of the fixture and the room. In case your room has a full-length mirror, you can have the fixtures mounted right on the mirror.

You need to understand that certain types of fixtures look better on certain mirrors than on others because of their reflections. Ceiling mounted fixtures are mostly recommended as the sole source of light in small rooms having light coloured walls. Larger rooms will obviously require extra lighting in addition to mirror lighting.

Fixture Style:

Select a fixture style having a translucent lens. A clear lens can make the fixture to look glaring. If the lens is opaque such as one made up of ceramic or metal, then it is not going to pass sufficient light on your face. Also, see to it that the lens is not a coloured one and does not influence the colour of the light.

Ensure that the fixture can successfully meet your requirements for cleaning as well as re-lamping and for spare parts. The 'vanity' fixtures are mostly linear and can be mounted vertically or horizontally above the sides of the mirror. If you are planning to go for wall sconces in a small room, then it is best to select the narrow ones that can fit in more appropriately.

Lamp or Bulb Type:

The type of lamp the fixture would require normally depends on the lamp's light distribution and colour qualities along with its maintenance costs. It is always advisable to first go for the lamp you need and then look for a fixture that can hold it properly.

The fluorescent mirror lamps provide a good range of lamps having different colour properties to choose from. Two foremost colour properties of lamps include the colour rendering and the colour temperature properties. The colour rendering property, also known as the CRI, scales from 0 to 100. Higher the CRI of a lamp, the better is its colour quality. The colour temperature property indicates if the light source appears warm (yellowish), cool (bluish), or neutral.
