If you're planning to buy and install hardwood flooring here are a few things you should know. Whether you plan to install or do it yourself or plan to hire a hardwood floor contractor these tips can save you a lot of time and money.

You'll want to do plenty of research on the Internet whether you buy your hardwood flooring online or at a local flooring store or hardwood flooring dealer or through your hardwood floor contractor at a discount. You want to get the best deal.

You can save money by buying and installing hardwood floors yourself however sometimes you can save more money hiring a hardwood floor contractor. A hardwood floor contractor can save you a lot of time if you don't have the time to spare. They will also do a professional job and not make the mistakes you might make when installing your prefinished or unfinished hardwood floor.

First of all you want to measure the areas where you want to the hardwood flooring installed to determine the square footage. Is there a plywood sub floor already in place?

Decide whether you want to install an unfinished or a prefinished hardwood floor. A prefinished hardwood floor has a polyurethane coating. So when it is installed you are done. If you install an unfinished hardwood floor you will need to sand it and coat it after you install it.

If you are buying prefinished hardwood flooring you will need to decide on the stain color.

You will want to decide whether you want to hire a hardwood floor contractor or if you will be installing the flooring yourself. If you decide to install the flooring yourself you will find flooring comes in a wide variety and you can nail it, glue it or use pre-attached strips of adhesive tape.

A prefinished hardwood floor that you glue down is the easiest to install whereas unfinished nail-down flooring takes more skill.

Make sure you measure accurately if you do it yourself. Before you order any hardwood flooring make sure you have made the right decision. Any money you save may be a lost if you end up with too much waste material. You can plan to waste 15% to 20%. Any more loss than this then you may be better off hiring a hardwood floor contractor.

Make sure to shop at your local hardwood flooring stores, lumber liquidators, Costco, and online suppliers to get an idea what it would cost if you buy the flooring yourself. You also need nails, glue, tools and other installation materials.

So these are just a few things to think about if you are going to install hardwood floors. After you know what it would cost to install the words yourself get some quotes from a hardwood floor contractor and keep in mind that if you make any mistakes it could be costly and you would not end up saving any money. Make sure to do plenty of research on the Internet and at your local stores and you will know that you are making the right decisions.
