Home & Garden : Is Hardwood Flooring Right For Your Home?

So, you are sitting at your coffee table having lunch when one wrong move knocks over your favorite dark beverage all over your light-colored carpet. Not again! Allowing your lunch to get cold, or soggy, or what have you, you groan and get up to frantically try to prevent the drink from staining your lovely carpet.

Maybe this doesn't happen often, but it is still such a pain when it does. Plus, there is the expense of getting a thorough cleaning on a regular basis. What a hassle! So, how can you make your living room and/or den more comfortable and, more importantly, easier to clean?

Change your floor! The home I grew up in had no carpet in it anywhere; the floor was predominantly hardwood and tile.

While this seemed strange to guests, it was remarkably easy to clean. Spills only required a paper towel and debris were collected and disposed of with no more than a broom and dustpan.

This is particularly advantageous if you have pets and/or young children. After having just raised a puppy (he is just about fully grown now), I know that little accidents are bound to happen.

What's worse, if carpet isn't cleaned almost immediately and thoroughly, you run the risk of seeing stains, damaging the layers underneath, and smelling some serious odors later.

Even when you take good care of your carpet or linoleum flooring, it still has to be replaced every few years. While this gives interior design enthusiasts the opportunity to redecorate/remodel fairly often, most homeowners would rather have a type of flooring that endures.

The truth is, when hardwood is done correctly, it can last for several centuries. That's right--I said centuries. Of course, it will require some maintenance over the years in order to keep it in tip-top shape, but this is not difficult, especially if you use a high-quality wood.

Hardwood floors are particularly appealing if you struggle with indoor allergies. Carpet is a prime hiding place for animal dander, molds, pollen, dust, and so on. You can vacuum for hours, but you will never collect all of it.

As I mentioned before, with a mere broom and dustpan, you can dispose of these unwanted allergens, all while increasing the overall value of your home and making any other major cleaning much easier for you.

Beautiful hardwood flooring can sometimes seem like a major investment, but when you consider how much it costs the average homeowner to professionally clean and regularly replace their carpet, the choice becomes much easier...
