Photo albums may well be a thing of the past, certainly in the next generation thanks to the digital age. No longer will Mum embarrass you in front of your new girlfriend by 'getting out the baby photo albums', which may be a sad tale for many.

That mustn't take anything away from digital technology and in particular digital photo frames which have become so popular that there cannot be that many households that do not have at least one displaying photos of the family, dogs, holiday snaps or drunken party photos.

Colourful, clear images that flick through your album in slide show format, that can adorn your walls, sit perfectly next to the telephone or by your bedside. Basically put, digital photo frames are the versatile technological must have at the moment.

Many people have a digital photo frame on their desk at work with pictures of loved ones scrolling before their eyes - a great little stress reliever and something to lift your mood if work is getting to you, which let's face it happens to us all on a weekly basis.

And what's more, they're easy to use. No intricate menus or complex navigation, simply plug a USB stick or your digital camera's memory card into the back and away you go.

A great feature of digital photo frames are interchangeable fascias which offer versatility allowing you to change the frame to fit the surrounding decor. Some digital photo frames (the cheaper ones in particular) are cumbersome and not particularly stylish and although some people may think it doesn't really matter what the frame looks like as you will be too busy focussing on the photos, that isn't necessarily the case as a lot of the time the frame will not be switched on.

Some frames have wifi capabilities that allow you to send photos to your frame instantly and also stream a photo gallery from online sharing websites such as Flickr and facebook. You can also stream RSS feeds containing the latest news, sports results or whatever it is you're interested in to display on your photo frame.

Some frames also allow photos to be sent from your PC to the frame's memory wirelessly using a Bluetooth dongle that receives data from your PC.
There are some noteworthy factors to be aware of when purchasing g digital photo frames. If you are thinking of get a frame to hang on a wall then you will be best served purchasing a battery powered digital photo frame, otherwise you will have to disguise the dangling power wire which isn't practical and looks ugly if just left to hang.

A point to note here is that most digital photo frames that are battery powered only has battery life of a couple of hours before you'll need to recharge, which isn't particularly practical but with technology moving so rapidly, that will surely soon change.

Also, be aware that if buying digital photo frames online most manufacturers give measurements from the diagonal of the screen, as with TV's, but some take the measurement from the very corner of the frame as opposed to the actual screen.

Digital photo frames are coming down in price too, but generally speaking you get what you pay for. Higher resolution screens really do make a comparative difference and the more expensive frames generally look sleeker and have a superior build quality.
