Tattoos once carried a stigma, only certain types of people sported the designs. However today you are just as likely to find a normal everyday college student or homemaker with a tattoo as a biker! Tat's have become the in thing and people from all walks of life are getting tattoos for all kinds of reasons. If you are thinking about getting your first ever tattoo you probably have a few questions and you have come to the right place!

Pain

The first question nearly everyone has about tattoos is will it hurt? The answer is not quite as simple as the question to be perfectly honest. The best answer is it depends on several criteria. Your pain threshold of course is the first determinant of how badly your tattoo will hurt. Second of all is the location of your intended tattoo. Certain areas of the body are naturally more sensitive and a high-speed needle is going to have more of an impact in these areas. One area most people will agree hurts more than any other is the spine. The skill of the tattoo artist and the tools they use also play apart. Finally, the size and design you choose will also have a lot to do with whether your tat is painful, mildly uncomfortable or painless.

Design

Choosing a design can be a complicated process. There are literally millions of potential tattoos you could get, and narrowing them, down can be exhausting! Start with your interests, if you are a dog lover or cat fancier maybe you would like an artful rendition on your arm or shoulder.

Many people prefer to create or redesign a tattoo to fit an important event in their life. A beautiful heart and banner with the name of a loved one is a popular choice. As are symbols of faith and spirituality, the cross and Jesus tattoos are one of the most requested tattoos.

Care

A new tattoo requires specific care to keep it looking beautiful and un-infected. Even though you are undoubtedly excited to show off your new tattoo, you should leave the bandage alone! Your tattoo artist will give you specific instructions on how long to leave the bandage on but generally it is only a matter of hours. Also, remember to keep putting the special ointment your artist should have given you on your tattoo for at least a week.

Do not take a new tattoo to the beach! Even once your tattoo is healed, you will want to put adequate sun block on, as the sun's rays can be very detrimental to brightly colored tats. If you do happen to forget and get a sunburn on a fresh tattoo be very careful what type of ointment you use as some over the counter sunburn treatments can actually draw ink out of your tat.

Bathing a new tattoo is not only okay it is advised; however, you do not want to soak in a hot tub of water for several weeks after being inked. Take a shower instead to prevent damage to the tat and be careful drying the area. Pat dry, never rub, especially when the tat is fresh!

Conclusion

Remember to keep an eye on your tattoo in the first few days or weeks. In the beginning, it may be a little red and raised, however this should pass quickly and if you begin to notice heat, red streaks or pus you will need to seek medical attention. While the needles are tiny and only go about a sixteenth of an inch in your skin, improper care or a poorly done tattoo can become infected so be careful.
