Is the cardigan the most versatile garment money can buy? It's a pertinent question, but one that will surely divide opinion, though one thing is for certain there is no doubting that the cardigan is indeed a flexible garment.

Everybody wears a cardigan at some point in their life - be it when you are a little baby or an elderly person, or both, but the cardigan has reinvented itself in recent years and has become very much trendy once again. Many of the world's top designers took advantage, as did the High Street brands and soon enough nearly everyone who is anyone had a cardigan.

Now, there are cardigan wearers and there are cashmere cardigan wearers! For the ultimate in luxury, everyone must own at least one cashmere garment and the cashmere cardigan just has to be that. Named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell who wore a buttoned down long sleeved knitted jacket during the Crimean War, the cardigan really has been a mainstay of British clothing and has translated across the globe.

The cardigan has become the single most popular woollen garment across the world but it is the cashmere cardigan that remains the most luxurious garment you could wish to possess and also remains an admired gift for a loved one.

Cashmere is the finest wool type that money can buy, yet it is very strong despite being incredibly soft to the touch. Cashmere garments ooze elegance with the way that the cut of the wool allows it to sit next to the body and allow the optimum fit. It is also a very warm material, much warmer than sheep's wool.

The cashmere cardigan is an extremely versatile garment that can pull off a look whether you are dressing down or dressing up. Worn with jeans and trainers, a cardigan can offer the perfect accessory for male or female wearers. Alternatively, with a smart pair of trousers or skirt and crisp shirt or blouse, a cashmere cardigan can be the perfect accompaniment.

There have been many contemporary attempts to drag the cardigan into the 21st century with many urban brands aiming to entice the younger market, but in all honesty the cardigan is better left untouched. The cashmere cardigan is king and will remain so for years to come. The cardigan will continue to be a timeless classic found in both male and female wardrobes, from babies, to teenagers, to adults, to the elderly.

They do say that once you experience the luxurious feel and fit of a cashmere garment you never return to lamb's wool and you can see why when you weigh up the pros and cons. And cashmere is not that expensive these days as many specialist manufacturers offer special offers and discounts, particularly during this current economic downturn.

The cashmere cardigan is here to stay, but don't take my word for it, try it yourself.
