Whatever your preferred interior design style a key point to consider is the style and type of window treatment you decide upon, because get it wrong and you whole room will look a disaster.
So many people leave the decision for window treatments as the last aspect of their room, when it should be included as a fundamental part of the top of your priority list if you are going to successfully achieve a stylish room.
There are a number of key points which you should consider when deciding a room design and for the most part where and the amount the natural light enters the room should be at the top of your list.
South facing windows offer plenty of natural light which depending on the climate you live will take priority as to the window dressing you select. Hot climates need blinds, shades or shutters to help keep rooms cool during the hottest parts of the day. Typically these can be made from wood, metal or fabrics. The colonial style wooden shutters and Venetian style blinds are most effective at controlling heat.
For those who live in areas where it rarely gets too hot, such as the UK can opt for a whole host of different window treatments for south facing windows. Those which maximise the amount of light will provide a light and airy feel to a room.
Sheer curtains in voile, gorgeous organza or sensuous silk are the perfect choice if you are afforded with the luxury of having a beautiful view from your windows which are not over looked by neighbours or people walking by, as these can become somewhat transparent in nature during the evenings when artificial lights are switched on.
A great way to alleviate this problem is to have the curtains lined. This will not only reduce the transparency, the lining will also help the curtains to hang properly as well as preventing them from becoming faded by sunlight.
North facing widows are those which for homes in the UK typically amount to darker rooms. As such lighter colours are a great option for your window treatments as these will maximise the amount of natural light to the full. Keeping light and neutral colours at the windows will also give the illusion of a larger window opening.
The weight of the fabric you opt for will also have an affect on the type of fitting you use. Logically and generally speaking, the heavier the weight of the curtains the more robust the tracking or poles need to be. The size of the windows will also need to be taken into consideration as well as the style of window treatment you want!
If you want to achieve a refined and elegant look to a room swags and tails remain a popular option. Usually a roller bind will be fitted into the recess of the window to enable the swags and tails to remain in-situ at all times.
Heavy and medium weight curtains will need a curtain pole which has a circumference which is sufficiently large to accommodate the weight. As a trendy and quirky alternative you may like to use large circumference curtain poles with sheer curtains to give a different trendy look to your windows! |
