A vaporizer is a simple device that boils herbs and other material in water to release the fume that can be inhaled. Vaporizers are mostly used to extract the health benefits from herbs for example clearing up nasal congestion or curing itchy eyes. Today when the world is fast veering towards age-old medicines and therapeutic practices, vaporizers are fast becoming popular with their stylish designs and easy to use benefits.

Herbs are packed with good chemicals that have great health benefits. These chemicals are released from the herb only when it is heated till a certain temperature. The chemicals are released in the form of a mist that if inhaled can help get rid of a number of allergenic symptoms from headaches to running nose. Vaporizers avoid using direct flame which eliminates the harmful effects of smoking where carcinogenic oxide compounds are released that may cause long lasting injuries to your lungs.

A vaporizer may utilize heat in three different ways:
- by convection
- by conduction and
- by radiation.

Let's look at how the vaporizers actually function.

For vaporizers that utilize conduction, the herbs are placed on a metal plate and then a flame is placed under the plate. Since the direct contact between the metal plate and the source of heat may burn the herbs, this design is avoided in modern day vaporizers. In convection vaporizers there is generally a collection dome where the vapor is collected before it is inhaled. It is said that the collection dome reduces the benefits of the chemicals released from the herbs.

In convection vaporizers hot air is passed through the herbs swiftly thereby heating the instantly and releasing the chemicals in the form of fumes. The heat does not touch the herbs. This method is said to release more fumes and is better health wise than the vaporizers that utilize conduction.

Although pretty rare, radiation vaporizers also function similarly as the ones that utilize convection. Light is used to heat the substance and thereby release the beneficial fumes. Here the substance absorbs the heat energy from the light source which in turn breaks the chemicals.

If you are experimental, then you can make a vaporizer at home too. Follow these steps.

1. Collect a blow light bulb, a knife, duct tape, some plastic straws, a plastic bottle, metal or plastic cap for the bottle and soldering iron.
2. Cut the end of the light bulb at the last thread of the metal screw.
3. On the bottle cap, make two holes. Place the bottle cap on the bulb.
4. Secure it with a duct tape and insert a straw one of the holes. Keep the other hole open.
5. Now grind the herb that you wish to inhale and place it in the bulb.
6. Finally put a lighter under the bulb and heat it. Inhale the vapor as the herb heats up gradually.

Remember a home made vaporizer will eventually break. Do not use a cracked vaporizers, if need be, build a new one.

  • Electric Vaporizers- Are They Cleaner And More Efficient

Plug-in vaporizers do not need water or steam to heat the herbs. Generally there are compressed disks of herbs like eucalyptus, menthol, etc. which is slowly heated by electric power. These vaporizers can directly be plugged in to a socket and it will release vapor as per your requirement.
