Venetian blinds are used by people across the land who appreciate the style of blinds but want something a little different, a window dressing with a little panache. They are chosen by homeowners as a more durable, hardy form of blind. Venetian blinds, as the name suggests have a history in Venice; however the majority of experts agree that this form of blind did not originate in the Mediterranean city and were instead brought to Venice by Venetian traders from Persia and beyond. Even so, due to the predominance of this form of blind within the city, the window covering has taken the city's name.
For those buying venetian blinds there are a myriad of considerations to make. Half of the battle when choosing window dressings for the home is to ensure that they will fit into the existing or proposed decor. This can be difficult to achieve but with a stylistic eye it should be possible to identify exactly which types of blind will be perfect for a home. What follows is an identification of some of the more common materials used in the manufacture of venetian blinds.
Bamboo has been used as a material for manufacturing blinds for centuries if not millennia. Bamboo venetians are based upon the Japanese style; this form of blind however was used in ancient china and has been used in the east since. Many consider bamboo blinds as an elegant window dressing that is able to bring a touch of the Far East into a home; they are a certain addition if an oriental design ethic is being adopted. Being constructed from bamboo, durability is guaranteed.
Aluminium is an extremely popular material for the construction of blinds for a number of reasons. Durability is clearly evident and when combined with their lightweight nature and ease of cleaning makes aluminium venetian blinds a definite option for those decorating. Additionally aluminium represents the most cost effective option and is typically available in a range of colours and styles allowing designers to run riot with outrageous themes.
Wood is understandably a popular option for venetian blinds due to its natural appeal and timeless elegance. Wood is also extremely strong and will last the test of time incredibly well. Simple and stylish they are able to fit into most interiors easily, greatly improving the existing decor. One point to remember however is that wood can be susceptible to warping in highly humid areas; subsequently if looking for kitchen or bathroom blinds and artificial material may be the more advisable option.
Hopefully this article has given a brief introduction into the types of materials used in the manufacturing of venetian blinds. It does however only represent a small snapshot of what is possible with this form of window covering, with enough imagination and artistic flair it is possible to have blinds that are the focal point of a room. |
