Wasps are one of the most disliked insects due to the ill reputation that precedes them with regard to their stings. However, it is essential to keep in mind that a wasp usually stings when it feels threatened or when its nest is disturbed. The area of the skin that the wasp stings usually becomes sore and itchy. Almost at once, pain sets in and the area starts getting inflamed resulting in great discomfort. In serious cases, the reaction may last for over 12 hours and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, palpitations, cramps, lightheadedness and a difficulty in breathing and swallowing. In such cases, immediate medical intervention is advisable.
Removing the sting that is left behind by the wasp is the most important step in relieving the symptoms of wasp stings. The sting looks like a small, dark-colored splinter, embedded in the skin. Wash the area thoroughly with cold water and a mild antiseptic solution. Then rub the area with a coarse towel. The friction will dislodge the sting. Placing a cold compress on the affected area for 15-20 minutes will help to reduce the soreness and inflammation once the sting is out. Pressing a cotton swab, dipped in apple cider vinegar, against the affected area is another effective home remedy as the vinegar neutralizes the effect of the venom deposited by the sting. The acidic nature of lemon juice has similar effects on the venom. Olive oil and aloe gel are known for their skin soothing and healing properties.
Citronella oil is an excellent natural insect repellent that has a pleasant fragrance. However, insects are repulsed by this smell. Add a few drops of citronella oil to water and spray this solution around the house, using a spray can. This will keep most insects at bay. If a wasp strays into the house or is casually flying around, it is better to leave it alone. It will fly off as silently as it entered. If a wasp senses fear, it will surely attack. If you have a wasp nest in the vicinity, burning a few dried leaves just below the nest will help in getting rid of the wasps. Wasps cannot bear smoke, and will leave the nest almost immediately. However, ensure that nobody is close by and all windows and doors of neighboring houses are shut, as the angered wasps will attack anyone in their path. Once the wasps have left, break the nest before they return. |
